Alexander B – Sustainable Nutrition for Dads

Jason has been working with Alexander for 3 months, coaching him on how to be successful with flexible eating and gain control of his nutrition before the arrival of his baby! In just 3 months Alexander achieved incredible results, dropping 20 lbs. and getting stronger in the gym. Read on to find out more about his experience!

My wife and I learned that she was pregnant earlier this year. Shortly thereafter, I woke up at 3AM, panicked that I was going to be a fat dad. Quarantine had significantly reduced my activity level, and my eating habits were misguided (peanut butter may be “healthy,” but four tablespoons at breakfast was not the right choice for me). The baby hadn’t arrived, but the scale was already trending in the wrong direction.

Apart from my aesthetic concerns, I also have always struggled with energy levels–both at work and in the gym. Some days I felt great, some days I felt terrible, but there didn’t seem to be a consistent pattern behind the good days or the bad days. The reality was that I was a 33-year old, who had no idea about how to appropriately feed myself.

From the beginning, Jason made flexible eating manageable. Unlike other clients, I had almost no experience tracking macros, but he introduced concepts slowly and never over-complicated things. He gave tough love when I needed a boost, “Life happens. But, the less often you do this the faster we will see progress…,” and helped maintain perspective when things were overwhelming, “Don’t be super crazy with family in town, do your best, track as best you can, and enjoy life.  No need to stress the family out.”

It feels like a cliché to say that Jason and OYE changed my life, but it’s true. In terms of fitness and wellness, it’s the best money I’ve ever spent. I’ll be using these habits for the rest of my life.

For me, OYE never felt like dieting. Apart from some adjustment days in the first few weeks, I didn’t feel that I didn’t have enough food or that I was depriving myself. (I’ve eaten Oreos on 89 of the last 92 days.) The changes in behavior were certainly difficult, but Jason helped me build a system of habits that make eating and hydrating correctly fairly automatic.

I also appreciated Jason’s focus on progress, instead of perfection. I know that some clients like to weigh/measure everything and get their macros lined up perfectly, but that wouldn’t have worked for me. It would have meant that the changes were unsustainable over the long-term. And at the end of the day, my goal was to make changes that would last for the foreseeable future.

The bottom line is that the OYE methodology works: I’ve lost exactly 20 lbs (189.4->169.4) over three months; I PRed my 1RM front squat and 1RM back squat; and perhaps most importantly, my energy levels at the gym and at work are much better. When I feel bad, I can track it back to a lack of water or improper nutrition over the previous 48 hours.

It feels like a cliché to say that Jason and OYE changed my life, but it’s true. In terms of fitness and wellness, it’s the best money I’ve ever spent. I’ll be using these habits for the rest of my life.
